This is our second Bollywood night. The rounds live in the 2010s: songs, dialogues, posters, and a few things we are keeping to ourselves. Teams are four; come alone and we will seat you. Dress the era if you like: the best Bollywood character of the night goes home with a prize. I will be hosting.

What happens

  • Teams of four. Come alone or as a pair and we seat you with people you have not met.
  • Every round is built around the night's theme: songs, dialogues, pictures, and a few we do not announce.
  • Scoring happens on your phone, live. The leaderboard is never a rumour.
  • One host at the front for the whole night. Ask her anything.
  • Prizes for the winning table and for the bonus rounds.

Before the night

The first Bollywood night taught us two things: people know far more lyrics than they admit, and a table of strangers becomes a team by round two.

Tonight I am at the front with the mic. Samman is at the back, more excited than he will let on, making sure the scores land on your phone the moment a round closes.

Come with a team or come alone. Either way you will be sitting with someone you have not met, and by the second song you will be arguing with them. That is the point.

I have the mic. You bring the lyrics.

The morning after

We started at four with the sun still on the terrace and finished well after dark, and I would plan it that way again. Watching the room change light halfway through a round is something a hall with no windows cannot give you.

It was chaotic. Our own game software closed the night on itself in the middle of round two, and later skipped a round while I was showing the scoreboard. Both got fixed from a laptop at the back of the room while the host kept you going. If your table sat through a pause that went on too long, that was us, not you. It is fixed for the next one.

Vivanta Kathmandu gave us the terrace and the patience for a room that changed shape twice before doors. Yuvana, Seto Bagh, Bodhi and Chupa Chups came in as partners on a first-time format with no numbers to show them, and I was glad to have every one of them in the room. I would work with them again tomorrow.

Twelve teams, six rounds, one buzzer that mostly behaved. We will do another one soon.

It was chaos, and I would do it again.
